3 DAYS TRIP: SOFIA-VELIKO TARNOVO-ARBANASSI- THE ROCK CHAPELS AT IVANOVO-THE THRACIAN TOMB AT THE VILLIAGE OF SVESHTARY

VELIKO TARNOVO was the capital city of the second Bulgarian Kingdom restored at the end of the 12th c. after an almost amphitheater on the slopes of several hills cut by the meanders of the river Yantra. The ipressive palace is located on the top of Tzarevetz Hill.

ARBANASSI this is a village close to Veliko Tarnovo, which is a special phenomenon in the Bulgarian architectural tradition. Even laymen can enjoy the peaceful charm of the big stone houses of the 17th, 18th 19th c., huddled in lucid gardens behind the high stone walls.

ROCK CHAPELS AT THE VILLIAGE OF IVANOVO. Nearby the village of Ivanovo, the Rusenski Lom river has cut its way to the Danube through an impressive karst massive whose almost vertical walls stand high on both sides of the picturesque river valley. In the 13th century, a remarkable cave monastery complex was created in the hollows of such rocks. The Ivanovo Monastery owes its unequalled cultural and historic value predominantly to the mural paintings dating from the 13th and 14th century, preserved in five of the rock chapels.

THE THRACIAN TOMB AT THE VILLAGE OF SVESHTARY has been dated towards the 3rd century BC, from the early Hellenistic era. It is covered by an earth mound and built of well known limestone quadrates. The building consist of a long and narrow corridor (dromos) and three squire chambers - two small and a bigger one - the tomb chamber. The plastic and artistic decoration of the monument is almost entirely concentrated in the main chamber and determines the monument's unique cultural and historic value.
